NEWCASTLE KZN: Local entry roads unaffected for now

Residents are again urged to stay at home unless absolutely necessary and avoid travelling out of town as far as possible.

Major routes into and out of Newcastle are currently quiet, despite protest action in surrounding areas.

Journalists reported no incidents on the N11 between the Utrecht/Volksrust turn-off heading all the way to Ingagane. However, a message pending verification suggests protesters may be assembling in the vicinity of Ballengeich Mine (approximately 16km outside of Newcastle).

Roads heading into Madadeni (both the Asiphephe Bridge and P483) are strewn with debris and police presence is heavy, due to earlier protests. Within the areas of Madadeni and Osizweni however, stores such as Boxer are currently being looted as protests flare up.

Journalists further reported no incidents on the R34 heading towards Memel nor on Boundary Road heading towards Normandien.

A local security company is currently airborne to assess the situation and provide reaction where necessary. SAPS teams are also currently on patrol throughout the area.

Residents are again urged to stay at home unless absolutely necessary and avoid travelling out of town as far as possible.
