Ladysmith KZN: Concern as Uthukela District records high numbers of Covid-19 cases

The number of daily hospital isolations is increasing steadily at both private and public hospitals

A virtual meeting of the KwaZulu-Natal Executive Council, which was held on Wednesday (July 7), revealed that five districts in the province are recording high numbers of Covid-19 cases. One of those five districts is the Uthukela District.

The special meeting was chaired by KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala.

On Wednesday, the Provincial Command Council received the latest report on the Covid-19 infection rate in KZN, which paints a bleak picture and an approaching danger.

The province showed a percentage change of 45% (increase) in the number of new cases received in the past week. The average number of cases recorded daily has increased from 859 to 1261 within a seven-day period.

The number of daily hospital isolations is increasing steadily at both private and public hospitals, including ICU patients and those requiring ventilation. Five districts are recording consistently high numbers during this third wave, namely Amajuba, Uthukela, Umzinyathi, Umgungundlovu and Zululand.

The report attributes the rise in Covid-19 cases to behaviour that includes lack of adherence to non- pharmaceutical measures and the continued holding of social gatherings and parties.

In addition, movement from provinces adjoining KwaZulu-Natal – such as Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Free State – means that the province is likely to see a further peak in the number of infections.

Provincial government continues to appeal to citizens to adhere to all Covid-19 protocols and ‘not embark on activities that may put lives at risk and spread the virus’.
