Ladysmith KZN: Municipal workers paid to sit and do nothing?

The businessman said it is unacceptable for municipal staff to be unsupervised when out on a job

A local businessman is upset with the service delivery provided by the municipality.

He says that municipal workers were sent out to clean up a vacant piece of land in Ruby Gailey Drive. However, yesterday and today (June 14 and 15), all he saw was that the workers were sitting on their cellphones next to an electrical box at the corner of Ruby Gailey Drive and Reservoir Road.

“Out of the eight employees present, only one was working! I drive past that area about 20 times a day, but every time I do, nothing is being done other than them relaxing,” he added.

“It’s so annoying to see our money being wasted on people who do not do their jobs. As you know, it’s taxpayers’ money that is used to pay the staff of the municipality. In this case, they are paid for sitting and doing nothing,” said the businessman.

His opinion is that it is unacceptable for the staff to be unsupervised.

When contacted for comment, Alfred Duma Local Municipality spokesperson Siya Maphalala said he would go to the site himself and conduct an inspection.
