VRYHEID KZN: School warms up the community with blanket donations

Mr Kirsten and Mrs van Eeden would like to thank the businesses and those who privately donated to this cause

Even though Covid-19 is still very much a reality that affects most people, sadly so is the reality of a freezing winter without any kind of warmth. Many households and families don’t have the comfort of heat during this time; some not even a blanket. For the past six years, during the month of June, Lakeside Park Primary School has a ‘blanket run’ for this very reason. The aim of the drive is to collect blankets and provide some warmth to those in need. Some of these blankets will even go to a few households of learners from their own school. Mrs S van Eeden is the co-ordinator of the drive, with the support of the principal, Mr Kirsten. During this year’s drive, they have managed to collect and buy 90 blankets. Even though they have managed to collect more in previous years, the school is nevertheless very grateful for every donation. Those who want to contribute to next year’s drive can do so by either donating a blanket or by means of a monetary donation. These donations can be made from as early as January for next year’s ‘run’. The majority of the blankets will go to Vryheid Child Welfare, who will distribute them among needy families. “When you’ve got nothing, then every little bit helps. I have walked into a household where there is nothing, while we have heaters and sleep under duvets and blankets,” Mr Kirsten emotionally explained. He furthermore said, “To me, it’s not about glory. Even if we have to challenge other schools to start a blanket run or start encouraging them to participate, and even if they only collect two or three blankets, it doesn’t matter; you are still helping.” Mr Kirsten and Mrs van Eeden would like to thank the businesses and those who privately donated to this cause. They would also like to remind everyone once again about next year’s blanket run.
