VRYHEID KZN: Update: The two lions still ‘visiting’ in Vryheid

Communities are warned to be on high alert and keep a watchful eye out for the two lions

The two escaped lions are still having a ‘gentle stroll’ in the area of Hlengeni, which is not far from Ngome. According to Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo, they are uncertain where exactly the male and female lions escaped from. It is alleged that the lions escaped from a reserve in the Pongola area, over a week ago. On Sunday (May 9), the Herald reported on the two ‘escapees’, that have killed five cattle and one horse in the Enyathi area. Vryheid SPCA was at the ‘scene of the crime’ to ensure that the cattle were indeed dead and not just severely injured. Rangers from Ezemvelo, together with professional hunters are currently tracking the lions to either capture or kill them. According to Mntambo, lions that escape from enclosures are often ‘destroyed’ to reduce the threat to the community. Communities are warned to be on high alert and keep a watchful eye out for the two lions.
