The community of Ladysmith is reeling in shock after the sad passing of iconic athletics hero Hassen Motala.
Hassen died yesterday (April 9) after a battle with illness.
He was well known for his extraordinary talent and achievements as a track athlete.
Back in 1979, he was the South African record holder in the 100-metre sprint, with a time of 10.5 seconds.
Condolence messages have poured in all over social media, with many people sharing posts detailing Hassen’s great feats as a runner.
Hassen is described by those who knew him as a humble person and a legend who made Ladysmith proud.Â
