Ladysmith KZN: Manhole overflows like a fountain for 2 weeks

"The smell is terrible and unbearable"

Farquhar Road resident Abraham Prinsloo is furious about an overflowing manhole next to his house.

An excavator machine was in the area about a month ago, cleaning up the stream (spruit) that runs under the road. Mr Prinsloo complains that after the machinery left, the manhole started giving problems.

The elevated manhole now resembles a fountain, with water gushing out of it and into the surrounding vegetation.

“For the past two consecutive weeks, the manhole has been overflowing,” says the unhappy resident.

He claims to have contacted uThukela numerous times, and every time they promise to send someone to solve the problem. “They make fake promises,” fumes Mr Prinsloo, who adds that no one has responded.

He says this is ridiculous, as the smell is ‘terrible and unbearable’. He is now fed up with calling uThukela and receiving no help.

uThukela has been approached for comment, but none has been received.
