NEWCASTLE KZN: Team Ladysmith dominates local angling league

The 'Angler of the Day' was Ladysmith's Pranesh Pandoy.

On a cold and misty Sunday morning, anglers cast their lines in the hope of landing an early bite to ease the nervous tension.

The fish, however, were reluctant to participate in this tango between the hunter and the hunted. Anglers in the Devland Impuphu Wholesalers Natal Fresh Water Angling Association (NFWAA) began queueing at the main gates of Richgate Park at Chelmsford/Ntshingwayo Dam, the day before the competition recently, hoping to secure their favourite fishing spots.

The Knock-Out Final was fished between Itec Freespool and newcomers, Ladysmith Angling Club.

“Team Ladysmith’s recent good form in the leagues made them the clear favourites to walk away with the league title,” admitted NFWAA President, Shabir Ismail.

According to Ismail, it proved to be a difficult day of fishing for both clubs, but Itec Freespool ultimately could not match the prowess of Team Ladysmith, who prevailed by 71 points to 37.

“The ‘Angler of the Day’ was Ladysmith’s Pranesh Pandoy who accumulated the most points and also caught the heaviest carp of the competition. Gerrit Harmse of Itec Freespool won the prize for the heaviest barbel for the second consecutive competition,” said Ismail.

He also congratulated Vish Govinder and his committed team on a well-deserved win. The remaining fixtures will be fished at Sandford Islands.
