VRYHEID KZN: Another 4 suspects arrested for robbery and attack on police officers

"We will not allow criminals to roam our streets and terrorise the community. All those who break the law will be prosecuted,"

Four more suspects have been arrested for a robbery and an attack on police officers that happened in December last year (2020). A robbery case was reported at Hlobane SAPS on December 1 after a group of armed men travelling in a vehicle held up the complainant in the KwaMnyathi area. At gunpoint, the suspects took six chainsaws, 65 litres of petrol and 65 litres of oil.

Hlobane police officers responded to the scene and were told that the suspects were heading towards Draaifontein. The officers blocked the route, and the suspects’ vehicle was spotted and stopped by two female police officers. Five men got out of the car, brandishing firearms. The suspects proceeded to rob the female officers of their State-issued firearms. One of the policewomen was injured and taken to hospital.

Charges of robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) were opened for investigation by Hlobane SAPS.

Two suspects, aged 30 and 32, were arrested on charges of robbery and assault GBH, and the stolen property was recovered by police in the Bhekuzulu area. The State firearms were also recovered.

The suspects appeared before the Vryheid Magistrate’s Court on December 3, 2020.

On Friday last week (March 12, 2021), police officers from the Provincial Organised Crime Unit based in Vryheid followed up on information regarding the remaining suspects in the case. The robbers were traced and four suspects were located in Alexandra, Gauteng. They were arrested and will now join their two co-accused. The suspects appeared before the Vryheid Magistrate’s Court yesterday (March 16) and were remanded into custody until March 24.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Thulani, welcomed the arrest of the culprits. “We will not allow criminals to roam our streets and terrorise the community. All those who break the law will be prosecuted,” he said.
