VRYHEID KZN: How schools in Vryheid fared the matric exams

High schools in Vryheid performed exceptionally well in the 2020 matric exams.

Despite all the academic curriculum upheaval, the ‘Class of 2020’ fought against all odds to eventually triumph. The learners and educators at schools around Abaqulusi Municipality did their best and ultimately succeeded in making 2020 a successful year.

High schools in Vryheid performed exceptionally well in the 2020 matric exams. One of the schools that shone is Hoërskool Pionier, which increased its pass rate from 97.9% to a perfect 100%. Among the other schools that achieved a ‘90% and above’ pass rate were Vryheid Landbou, which dropped from 98% to 93.3%; Isolumuzi High, dropping from 98.2% to 94%; Mondlo Secondary at 96.6%; and Khondlo, which improved from 85.6% to an impressive 93.9%.

Vryheid High School saw a slight drop from 95.3% to 87.7%, while Filidi Secondary was also down from 98.2% to 87.4%. Vryheid Comprehensive obtained a 70.2% pass rate, while Sekethwayo saw a decrease from 91.3% to 62.5%. Iskhiye Secondary has gone from 75% in 2018 to 90% in 2019 and now 76.9% in 2020. Gudu saw a slight increase from 67% to 68.7%, while Ikhethelo has taken great strides in improving its results from 26.7% in 2018 to 64.5% in 2019 and now 73% in 2020. Mpofini disappointingly dropped from 56.4% to 48.6%.

In spite of the Covid-19 related challenges, all districts performed above 70%. The matric performance in the Zululand District went down by 2.4% to a pass rate of 76.7%. The leading district was Ugu with 81.7%, followed by Umlazi (80.9%), Umkhanyakude (80,6%), Amajuba (80.5%), Umgungundlovu (80.3%), Ilembe (76.9%), Zululand (76.7%), Pinetown (75.8%), Harry Gwala (75%), King Cetshwayo (74.8%), Uthukela (73.5%) and Umzinyathi (72.6%).

The acting mayor of Abaqulusi, Mncedisi Maphisa, commented that, ”The day the 2020 matric results were released was a day of celebration as we celebrated the achievements of our heroes and heroines in the ‘Class of 2020’. On behalf of Abaqulusi Municipality, I wish to congratulate the ‘Class of 2020’ for making us proud under the difficult circumstances they were faced with. The ‘Class of 2020’ will go down in history as the class that excelled in the ‘new normal’ and rose above all circumstances they were faced with. I wish to encourage our matriculants of 2020 to grab each and every education opportunity that will present itself and run with it. The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams and if you truly believe it, you can achieve it. We are proud of each and every one of you, and will provide any support we can to make your dreams a reality.”

In a Cabinet meeting last week Wednesday, the Cabinet congratulated the ‘Class of 2020’ for persevering to obtain a sterling set of matric results. The Cabinet wishes all the learners well as they embark on their respective post-school endeavours.
