ESTCOURT KZN: Shop owner roused from sleep by gunfire and thieves

Two armed men entered the store room; one pointed a firearm at Mr Abrar while another assaulted him

Police are urging business owners to refrain from keeping large sums of money at their business premises and avoid using it as a residence.

This comes after a 29-year-old shop owner in the Kwa Mkhize area of Ntabamhlophe became a victim of crime while he was asleep in a store room.

The incident took place on February 23 at about 3am.

According to police, the shop owner – Ali Abrar – was roused from his sleep when he heard gunshots, followed by a loud bang on the shop gate.

Two armed men entered the store room; one pointed a firearm at Mr Abrar while another assaulted him.

“Both suspects ransacked the victim’s tuck shop. They took cigarettes, cell phones, tobacco and cash before they fled the scene,” said police spokesperson Captain Bongani Nyathi.

A case of robbery was open for investigation at the Ntabamhlophe police station.

“We are requesting that businesses people not use their business as a place to sleep and keep large sums of money. They become easy targets for criminals. They are also requested to hire security personnel and bank money regularly,” added Captain Nyathi.
