Ladysmith KZN: 12-year-old girl drowns in water-filled pit

Children and community members gathered around while police carried out their duties at the scene

A young girl tragically drowned this afternoon (November 24) in the Umbulwane area.

It is believed that a group of children were playing in a man-made pool caused by a leaking pipe. Children would routinely play in the pool of water to cool off in the heat.

However, on this occasion, the fun turned to tragedy when a 12-year-old girl drowned. When emergency personnel and police arrived, the child’s body had been dragged out of the water by community members and she was declared dead at the scene.

Mortuary services took away the body.

Community members in the area say they have reported the ‘man-made pool’ to uThukela on many occasions, but nothing has been done about it.
