NEWCASTLE KZN: CBD outfitters ravaged by late-night fire

A reporter at the scene said the damage was not limited to Zacks alone.

Just before midnight, firefighters and emergency personnel responded to a fire at Zacks International Store, situated at the corner of Harding and Allen Streets in the Newcastle CBD.

According to a journalist on scene, the damage was not limited to Zacks alone.

Ithemba Security’s Morne Potgieter, who was responding to a crime scene in the vicinity, said he was chasing down suspects believed to have been involved in a break-in at another store, when he saw the fire.

Firefighters on the scene.

He then made a request to fellow community crimefighters to summon Fire Services.

“When I arrived at the scene, the store was already alight and firefighters were at the scene,” confirmed Potgieter. “We are not 100% sure where the fire started but all the role players were at the scene… it could have possibly been a break-in,” he speculated.

The Newcastle Advertiser has made contact with Newcastle SAPS as well as Mlungisi Khumalo, Head of Communications for the Newcastle Municipality, for more clarity from police and Fire Services officials.
