ESTCOURT: Learning about Covid-19 is fun

The lesson was well-received by the learners

Grade 6 learners at Riverdale Primary School had fun while learning about the coronavirus. Educator Deborah Gamede came up with innovative ways for the learners to remember the rules and regulations of Covid-19.

The lesson started with learning about Covid-19, how it started, the causes, symptoms as well as how it spreads and prevention.

“I emphasized that they must avoid touching MEN – mouth, eyes and nose – and rather embrace WOMEN – wash hands, obey directives, maintain social distance exercise often and no sharing/hugging,” explained Mrs Gamede.

“Children like touching each other, so I taught them handshake alternatives to avoid touching their friends when greeting. In order to always remember, I told them to practice hand shake alternatives. I told them to sing “Jerusalema” while familiarizing themselves with the handshake alternatives. Students learn easily by singing or imitating something,” added Mrs Gamede.

The lesson was well-received by the learners.

“I then combined some of my grade sixes with my Girl Guides and Unyaka Wakho Youth Foundation Advocates for Change members to dance while doing alternative handshakes using the “Jerusalema” song,” concluded Mrs Gamede.
