ESTCOURT: Dry taps after armed robbery at water treatment works

"This clearly shows that criminals are hell-bent on making it difficult for uThukela District Municipality to effectively render services"

Water supply to several areas in Loskop was interrupted last Wednesday after an armed robbery at the Loskop Water Treatment Works.

It is alleged that a group of armed suspects entered the facility at night, where they threatened and tied up the security guards and operators on duty.

The thieves then stole electrical cables from the water treatment works, as well as four cell-phones from the staff on duty.

“Our assistant came from the Maxode site camp security and noticed there was something strange happening at the plant. He then contacted the police, who came and untied the employees after the suspects had already left the site with all the cables and cell-phones belonging to the security guard and operator,” said uThukela District Municipality communications manager Jabulani Mkhonza.

Residents in Loskop’s Ward 2, 3 and 4 experienced water cuts as a result of the theft.

“In less than two weeks, since the Bhekuzulu pump station at Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality was broken into and vandalised, the Loskop Water Treatment Works has now been targeted too. This clearly shows that criminals are hell-bent on making it difficult for uThukela District Municipality to effectively render services,” added Mr Mkhonza.
