ESTCOURT: Young darts player with his eyes on the prize

Regan hopes that darts will grow and thrive in Estcourt, especially among the younger generation

At 30 years old, Regan Busschers is one of the younger members of the Umtshezi Darts Association, but he has really been making his mark, earning a position in the B Division and receiving awards.

Regan grew up in Verulam, Durban, before his family moved to Estcourt years ago. With darts being one of his hobbies, he sought to be part of this sport and soon became affiliated with the Umtshezi Darts Association.

He joined the association in 2016 and was heartily welcomed by fellow members. Regan began playing competitively at club level almost immediately.

Bolstered by the camaraderie and experience of fellow club members, he built his confidence and game. His favourite game is the 501 format because he says it tests a player’s true abilities.

One of the most memorable events in his darts-playing career has been participating in the prestigious South African Championship.

“Playing well and winning against some very good players was a wonderful feeling and definitely one of my highlights,” says Regan.

He also enjoys the club competitions, which are usually accompanied by intense rivalry, as well as friendly banter among the members.

As far as disappointments go, Regan says this would be losing.

“I once lost a tournament against a good player because I could not close the game,” he said.

The game of darts has many advantages for this young player.

“It teaches a person discipline, hand-eye co-ordination, teamwork and responsibility. It has given me great self-esteem, and tolerance towards the sport and fellow players,” Regan explains.

The ability to visit new places, meet new people and watch them playing has also been an asset.

His dream is to aim higher within the darts fraternity.

“I would like to become a captain and to one day dominate in the SA Championship,” he says.

Regan hopes that darts will grow and thrive in Estcourt, especially among the younger generation. His idol is Eric John Bristow, who was an English professional darts player and ranked world number one by the World Darts Federation a record five times.

“He was the best in the world and inspired me to push further,” enthuses Regan.

When Regan isn’t enjoying a game of darts with friends or club members, he enjoys fishing.
