GLENCOE: Illegal power clamp down sparks unrest

SAPS and SANDF members have been deployed in the area

Tyres were set ablaze after illegal electricity connections were identified and removed in Sithembile, Glencoe, today.

Electricians, backed up by SAPS and SANDF members, moved in to remove the power connections.

One worker, who declined to be named, said a firearm was pulled on he and his colleague after residents became upset when the authorities moved in.

They immediately withdrew from the area. Electricity theft is costing Endumeni Municipality about R25-million a year. In June alone, the theft from illegal power connections was put at R5-million.
