Ladysmith: Women councillors unite against the scourge of GBV

"We say that if you rape a woman or a child, chemical castration is the only way to end all of this”

Ladysmith KZN –  Women who are councillors under Alfred Duma Local Municipality held a Gender-Based Violence Dialogue at the Ladysmith Town Hall on Friday, September 4, in light of the fact that the number of women and children killed every day is on the rise.

“As women who are leaders in our communities, we cannot turn a blind eye to the killing of women and children, so that is why we decided to take part in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV),” said Cllr Thabisile Njoko.

According to Cllr Njoko, during the dialogue with various stakeholders, they discussed ways to stop GBV and also took some time to look at factors that might lead men to abuse and behave violently towards women.

“We want to end the killings! Enough is enough!” was the message.

Stakeholders present at the dialogue included the Department of Health, SAPS, Department of Education, Men’s Forum and community leaders.

Cllr Njoko said that a programme will be initiated to teach men about GBV, as well as ways to avoid being an abuser of women.

“We have had several prayers against GBV and we have picketed, but we do not see any change. Instead, the number keeps on escalating.

“Thus, we say that if you rape a woman or a child, chemical castration is the only way to end all of this,” concluded Cllr Njoko.
