ESTCOURT: Breaking the silence to fight gender-based violence

Cheers and applause reverberated through the street as the audience welcomed the wise words from the guest speakers

The curtain was pulled back on gender-based violence (GBV) last Thursday when dozens of people converged on the central business district (CBD) to break the silence surrounding this scourge that is sweeping the country. \

Dressed in black and carrying placards, participants stationed themselves at the intersection of Harding and Victoria streets to speak openly and frankly about violence, murder, and abuse of women and children.

The message is loud and clear.

This GBV awareness event was hosted by Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality and included representatives from several government departments, as well as religious leaders.

Guest speakers from the Social Development Department, Zama Nene and Ms Nyeza.

After a prayer, various guest speakers took the time to address the small crowd that had gathered on the roadside.
The message from each speaker was clear: Stop violence against women and children.

The audience was sensitised to the different types of abuse, which includes emotional and financial abuse.

Participants carried placards to sensitise the community about the scourge of violence.
