Ward committees launched at eMadlangeni Municipality

Councillors were urged to uphold high ethical values and comply with their roles and responsibilities.

eMADLANGENI – The eMadlangeni Local Municipality public participation unit and Department of Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) launched ward committees at eMadlangeni Municipality at Utrecht Town Hall on January 19.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Ntsikelelo Ndlovu stated ward committees represented communities with various interest groups, and their main responsibility was to liaise with the Councillors on issues affecting the communities that have elected them. Councillors were urged to uphold high ethical values and comply with their roles and responsibilities.

Zanele Sithole from COGTA concluded the induction of ward committees, and said their purpose is to effectively support the elected ward councillor.

She outlined the key responsibilities of the ward committees’ which included convening and attending ward meetings, ensuring that war rooms are functional, tabling reports and plans which address needs and priorities of the community, and providing feedback on services rendered by the municipality that impact the ward in order to formulate recommendations to be submitted to the municipality through the ward councillor.

Municipal speaker, Cllr ZH. Madi encouraged ward committee members to always serve the best interests of the community, by recommending municipal programmes which are community centered, driven and implemented while acknowledging the diversity of the ward.

Ward committee members were also urged to adhere to the principles of good governance, which are: integrity, objectivity, accountability, regular reporting, transparency, consensus, leadership, and public participation.

eMadlangeni has 60 ward committees and all members signed a pledge to serve the community.

Cllr LY. Mhlungu closed the event with encouraging words to ward committees.
