Game farm animals found ensnared in death traps

Five wildebeest, an eland, waterbuck, three blesbuck and an ostrich were found trapped and lifeless in homemade snares that were set up on the game farm

Illegal hunting on Slivyre Game Farm has reared its ugly head again.

Game farm owner Jacques van der Merwe has been hit by another wave of illegal hunting on his property on the R74.
This time, five wildebeest, an eland, waterbuck, three blesbuck and an ostrich were found trapped and lifeless in homemade snares that were set up on the game farm.

“It has started again. All the animals were found dead in snares in the last two weeks,” said Mr van der Merwe.

This is a massive blow for Slivyre Game Farm, whose owners and staff have been fighting an uphill battle against illegal hunting.

In November last year, 102 snares and 17 animal carcasses were found within the space of three weeks.

Mr van der Merwe believes that a group of people are setting the snares and hunting illegally with dogs, primarily to sell the meat.
