‘Virtual’ Polar Bear Swim is a splashing success

100% of the funds raised go to the Estcourt Animal Shelter and Khetani Animal Shelter (Winterton), and a target of R20,000 was set

Scores of swimmers took a ‘leap of faith’ and braved icy waters on Saturday (June 20) to be part of the annual Polar Bear Swim.

This year’s event took a different format to suit Covid-19 lockdown regulations, with the organising team hosting a ‘virtual’ swim.

Swimmers took to the water in dams, pools and even bathtubs to be part of this much-loved fund-raiser, and uploaded photos or video to the Polar Bear Swim Facebook Page. A drawing competition was also hosted for children under 12 years old.

Mike Greatwood, Liz Burczak, Carol Fourie, Trezanne Mottram, Catherine Bassage and Grant Webber practice social distance swimming.

The participants stand a chance of bagging great prizes, including vouchers and getaways in the Drakensberg.
Polar Bear Swim convener Belinda Espag said this year’s event went beyond their expectations.

“We had to make creative choices to keep the Polar Bear Swim going. We were very nervous, but were so blessed with the support,” she said.

100% of the funds raised go to the Estcourt Animal Shelter and Khetani Animal Shelter (Winterton), and a target of R20,000 was set. The final amount raised will be revealed on the Polar Bear Swim Facebook Page this Friday.
