Police officer sentenced 15 years’ imprisonment for corruption

He demanded R21,000 from the accused’s girlfriend in order not to oppose bail

Constable Simon Mvelase (33), who was stationed at Van Reenen detectives, was sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for corruption by the Ezakheni Regional Court on Friday.

During the course of August 2016, Constable Mvelase was an investigating officer in a theft case which happened in the Van Reenen area. He demanded R21,000 from the accused’s girlfriend in order not to oppose bail.

The matter was reported to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit and an undercover operation was conducted, resulting in his arrest.

Mvelase made a series of court appearances and was out on bail when he was sentenced on Friday (April 6).
