Local poet Bongani Mchunu, better known in his circle as Dokotela, has been nominated for the Southern African Disabled Musicians Association (SADMA).
Dokotela, who is from Gluckstadt, is calling for people to show support by voting for him so he can bring the award home.
“I would like to urge people to please vote for me; they can vote as many times as they want. Voting started on March 1 and will continue until August 20. I am trying to get as many votes as possible, so I can bring this award home. Those who struggle to follow the prompts to vote can ask me how to do it on my social media accounts, or they can just donate airtime and I will do the voting myself. They can find me on my personal Facebook account as Bongani Dokotela Mchunu or Bongani Mchunu ‘Rise’, which is my Facebook Page, or on WhatsApp on 079-967-8556. I also urge people to subscribe to my channel, where I have shared a lot of my poetry. Even though poetry doesn’t have much of a following, it is ‘life’ to many. Therefore we would really appreciate support as poets in Vryheid,” said Dokotela.

SADMA is an organisation that carries a broad advocacy for disabled musicians throughout the whole of Southern Africa. It also serves as a vehicle for providing education and training in the complex issues of copyright, royalties, publishing and recording contracts.
SADMA has also established a music recording studio that was especially designed to serve the peculiar needs of blind and physically disabled musicians. According to SADMA, the main purpose of the studio is to alleviate the problems encountered by disabled musicians in recording their music in commercial recording studios.
