Harpo Primary fosters a love of the written word

"That is how we create awareness and love of reading".

Harpo Primary School in Lakeside had a joyful day of reading and building a love of the written word.
The school celebrated World Read Aloud Day recently, and some of the learners were called on to read aloud to the entire school, as a way of promoting reading from a young age.
Principal of the school, Malibongwe Masombuka said, “The school has a very active reading program that we call a Bookworm Club.
“That is how we create awareness and love of reading. We normally get Grade Five, Six and Seven learners to read to the young ones, to promote reading from a very young age.
“We are also encouraging them to utilise the community libraries, for their minds to stay active even when the schools are closed, hence we have also invited the librarians to speak to the learners.”

13-year-old Grade Seven learner, Noluthando Mbuyisa, who also read to the entire school, said reading was important for the future.
“If you cannot read, then you can never have a future, because everything in life requires reading. In order to write an exam, you must read; in order to become qualified for any career you choose, you must read. So reading is very important; it exercises our minds, it keeps us motivated and that is why I am always encouraging others to never stop reading,” said Noluthando.
World Read Aloud Day was founded in 2010 as an opportunity for people across the globe to celebrate the joy of reading aloud, and advocate for literacy as a fundamental human right which belongs to everyone.
