Partnering to restore dignity and serve humanity

November 21 was a momentous day for two schools in deeply rural areas of Frere and Bergville.

Thanks to generous donations from sponsors, both schools were provided with toilets.

After months of hard work on the ground by the Gift of the Givers Estcourt, funded by the Jamiatul Ulama of South Africa, it was time to officially hand over the ablution blocks to the schools.

The first stop was at Hattingshope Primary School in Frere, where the learners and educators have benefited from five new ‘pour flush’ toilets.

Present at the handover were Mr Mazibuko (Education Department Manager of Infrastructure in the Uthukela District), Moulana Asad Pandor from Jamiatul Ulama of South Africa, representatives from Gift of the Givers as well as the principal Mrs Mazibuko, staff and learners of the school.

It was evident that the school fraternity was extremely grateful for the donation, which was funded by the learners of the Johannesburg Muslim School.

Principal Mrs Mahlobo handed out certificates of appreciation to the guests.

The children were given a demonstration on how the toilets work and thereafter it was time for more gifts.

Moulana Asad Pandor handed over balls for soccer and netball to the school, and the children’s faces lit up with delight when they saw the sweet packs, as well as stationery and soup packs they were also receiving.

After leaving the smiling faces at Hattingshope Primary School behind, the team drove to Sandokuvela Primary School, situated in Isandlwane on the outskirts of Bergville.

Here, the team was joined by Hafez Zubair Vaid and family (Total Constantia Kloof), who are the main sponsors, as well as a delegation from Okhahlamba Local Municipality.

During the handover, the sponsors were treated to speeches, songs and dances of appreciation from the Principal Mr Mahlobo, learners, staff and parents, as well as municipal staff.

In turn, the sponsors encouraged the children to take care of the facilities and continue to strive for academic excellence.

Okhahlamba Local Municipality was specifically thanked for making resources available for the building of the toilets.

The day ended on a high note when the children were rewarded with stationery, sweets and soup packs to take home.
