Mayoral Cup overflows with sports talent

Despite the heavy rains which bore down, it was decided 'the games must go on'

Despite the heavy rain which bore down, it was decided ‘the games must go on’.
This past Saturday, the AbaQulusi Municipality hosted its annual Mayoral Cup Games at Cecil Emmett Sport Grounds.
In a bid to curb social ills among the youth and to foster interest in sport, a total of 600 enthusiastic young athletes were invited to participate in chess, netball, volleyball, soccer and indigenous games.
These participants were transported from all areas of the municipal jurisdiction.
Young players had the opportunity to showcase their skills, with scouts keeping a close eye on the games.
Acting Mayor, Mncedisi Maphisa commented, “We are very proud of this achievement, as it displays our commitment and utmost goal, which is to enrich and develop the citizens of AbaQulusi in the best manner in which we can.”
He thanked the distinguished guests who ensured the municipality’s vision was a success.
These included Ukhozi FM Presenter and founder of Uvukile Gospel Festival, Irvin Sihlophe, former AmaZulu and Moroka Swallows player, Japhet Zwane, who also served as a talent scout for Golden Arrows FC, AmaZulu talent scout, Ayanda Mkhize and University of KwaZulu-Natal talent scout, Nhlanhla Shibe.
Cllr Maphisa encouraged the young players with this message: “We would like to wish them well as they journey off to their destinies. May God Almighty nurture them and let them soar high like eagles. To those who didn’t make it, it is not the end of the world. Just because you were not the best this year, doesn’t mean you won’t be the best in the following year. Work hard, hold on to your dream and believe in yourself. It will soon work out for you as well.”
The Deputy Mayor encouraged youths to invest their energy into God-given talents and to never neglect their studies.
Cllr Maphisa concluded with his thanks to his colleagues who helped with coordination of the Mayoral Cup, and encouraged municipal staff to work towards service delivery for all people of AbaQulusi.
