784 AbaQulusi residents have been recruited by the IEC for the elections #IMadeMyMark

IEC staff are not allowed to be politically active in their communities.

There are 112 voting stations in AbaQulusi, with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) having recruited 784 community members to assist on election day, May 8, and with the special votes taking place on May 6 and 7.

A presiding officer, a deputy presiding officer and five assistants have been appointed at each of the local voting stations.

The role of the presiding officer is to deal with any appeals raised by political parties during the election process.

Appeals can be escalated to the provincial and the national IEC officials if political parties are unhappy with how they are handled locally, and may approach the Electoral Court to rule on any conflict should the need arise.

IEC staff are not allowed to be politically active in their communities and their names and details are shared with all of the political parties contesting the elections, which are given the opportunity to dispute the appointments.

“So far nobody has objected to the staff who were appointed in AbaQulusi,” says Municipal Electoral Officer, PJ Ndlovu.

Residents who have any queries regarding the election process can contact PJ on 076 627 3024.
