Lions Mayfair raises R200K+ for charity
While some residents were sceptical that the Mayfair wouldn't enjoy the support it did in previous years, tens of thousands of feet through the gates on Friday and Saturday, proved them wrong.
MORE than R200 000 was raised for charity at this weekend’s Lions Mayfair.
“Every cent gets ploughed back into the community,” promised Lions member, Cindy Mossop.
While beneficiaries of the Mayfair will be finalised at the next Lions Club meeting, Mrs Mossop says that the Buurtwag, SPCA, CMD and CANSA are just some of the non-profit organisations that can be assured of the Lions’ support.

“The funds raised also make it possible for us to continue to buy school shoes for pupils whose parents cannot afford it, and we can afford to host our annual Christmas party for underprivileged children,” she added.

Most of the food stalls, including the SPCA wors rolls stall, Filipes fish and chips stall and the Vryheid Herald’s Coke can were sold out by early Saturday evening.

“Business was great and we encourage other local businesses to use the Mayfair as an opportunity to promote your unique products,” urged Mrs Mossop. “Because it is a charity event, businesses can write off the cost of a stall against their taxes.”
In response to the growing number of feet through the gates, next the Lions Club has plans for stricter crowd control. They will also insist on every child under the age of 12 years old wearing a wrist band with the parents contact number on it. The wrist bands will be made available at the entrance and will help security personnel reunite children, who are lost, with their parents.
Despite being sore and tired from the hard work and long hours they put in to ensuring the Mayfair was a success, Lions members said they felt amazing, knowing the impact their efforts will make in the lives of the less fortunate.
