Recognising the power of social media

The school recently staged a major production that deeply impacted the audience with its message.

De La Salle Holy Cross College learners delivered an important message to their friends during their major production, When they go low, we go high.

Young performers at the school left audiences feeling quite introspective after watching the thought-provoking show.

The production’s director, David Flemmer, who is also the school’s creative arts teacher for grades 7 to 9, said the play painted a picture of the negative effects that social media could have, such as cyberbullying. “I found it important that we address the issues that take place on social media,” he said.

The play follows the character of Buhle who is on a mission to help give a voice to a female peer. This was after an image of the peer was shared across social media platforms and untrue rumours spread about the picture, devastating the young girl’s life.

“I know parents would like to believe that their children are not exposed to this side of social media and in certain situations, this may be the case, but the story is very relevant to our youth today. Though we may not think it is,” said Flemmer, adding the performers completely inhabited their roles.

According to the director, it was a difficult process for the actors since it was a very emotional production. However, he was proud that the young actors took on the vulnerability of each character and produced it well.

Flemmer also acknowledged the contributions of Daniel Buckland as co-director. “His knowledge and expertise have been awe-inspiring for the pupils.”
