Magic behind the mic in Melville

MELVILLE – Local songstress, Courus shares on how music has enchanted her life as she gets ready to perform at Melville's Lonely Hearts Club.

Music is magic, with its power to change the atmosphere of any setting, turning it to jubilant or sad, it compels the listener to feel something bigger than themselves.

A musical magician in our midst is Courtney Williams, who will wield the attention of an audience at Melville’s Lonely Hearts Club. The live event was scheduled for 2 June and will be streamed online for your viewing pleasure on 12 June, with tickets sold on Quicket.

The singer/songwriter who goes by the stage name Courus, is an artist whose music fuses neo-soul, hip-hop, contemporary jazz, soul and RnB.

Originally from Kariega, Eastern Cape, Courus’ enchantment with music started from a young age. “Music has been in my family and passed on to generations for years. I was eight years old when I first sang on a stage and it felt so natural, like I belonged there.”

The Ferndale resident’s fascination with the art form has deepened with every melody sung because of its evolution through the generations and in the many ways it can be interpreted which keeps her wanting to learn more about it. A writer and composer, Courus explained though there are challenges like writer’s block and finding the needed inspiration that may impede her, she makes sure to take full advantage of any stroke of lyrical genius that might may thrill her at that moment.

She has looked up to and found great inspiration in musicians such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Jill Scott to name a few.

A guitarist who also dabbles in the piano, Courus hopes her music conjures healing of her listeners mental, emotional and physical well-being, “My first project is about self-discovery, healing, overcoming and love and the new material that I am writing is about finding peace within yourself, self-love and loving others.”
Her hopes are to tour the world one day with her music. One of her biggest moments so far was performing on the Huawei Joburg Day stage alongside artists such as Mi Casa, DJ Zinhle, Prime Circle, Goodluck and Black Motion. Her most spell-binding moment was about two years ago when people in her hometown came out in their numbers to support her at one of her shows in Gqeberha. On the night, where she performed at the Opera House Barn Theatre, the venue was sold out.

To young musicians, Courus urged them to stay true to themselves and their art throughout. “We are all unique and we should embrace our uniqueness. We need more real and honest role models in this world that stay true to themselves no matter the circumstances. This is what I hope the younger artists get from my brand and my craft.”
