Local teen model sashays towards a win

FAIRLAND – Katelynn Strydom looks to become someone young girls can look up to as she lives out her dreams one pageant at a time.

Local teen, Katelynn Strydom sets her sights on winning big as she gets ready to compete in Miss Teen Regal.

The competition, which will be held at Melrose Arch on 3 April has her raise funds for People Opposing Women Abuse (Powa).

The Redfford House Northcliff learner said she sees it as a great opportunity to use her voice to stand up for women and girls who might not have the strength to do so for themselves. “I want to help, be a support for women who have no one to talk to,” she said.

From when she was a little girl Katelynn would watch Miss South Africa with much enthusiasm and one day, while watching, she saw Demi-Leigh Tebow walk the stage in a beautiful white gown. From that day on Katelynn knew she wanted to follow in her footsteps. She did not think that she would make it to become top 10 finalist but now she is determined to make a success of it. To young girls out there Katelynn said to never give up on your dreams no matter your background. “If you work hard enough and sacrifice your time you will get where you want to be.”

Her mother, Dawn Becker, is very proud of her and said her daughter is a go-getter who has accomplished whatever she put her mind to. To other mothers, who are unsure about their child getting into the model industry, she said modelling can assist in confidence-building and if this is your child’s dream then you must support your child. “She has come out of her shell and it has helped grow into a young lady.”

Should she win the competition, Katelynn has set her sights on various goals, her first being to encourage young girls to participate in male-dominated sports. Her second is to compete in Miss South Africa in five years’ times, and to open her own modelling agency and soon after that she aims to obtain her biggest goal which is to win Miss Universe.
