Self Catering Accommodation or 3-star Luxury Lodges in the Kruger?

3-star luxury lodges are positioned within private reserves of the Kruger, offering a more exclusive safari experience because there are fewer crowds and vehicles about.

The Kruger National Park is a popular safari destination not only because it is home to the famous Big Five but because there is a wide range of accommodation options to choose from, including self-catering rest camps, affordable 3-star luxury lodges, and ultra luxurious lodges.

When planning a safari getaway, it is important to look at all of the accommodation options and consider what is being offered in the nightly rate, as well as what additional expenses you will incur during your stay. It is about finding those lodges that offer value for money.

Self-catering rest camps are rustic yet comfortable and are a great option for families who are looking for accommodation that can sleep as many as six people and offer flexibility when it comes to meal planning and activities. Self-catering accommodation in the Kruger is affordable but you do need to consider the extra costs you will incur for meals and safari activities, unless you plan on self-driving the park. If you plan on self-driving the park, it is important to note that during the peak season months, the camps and roads in the Kruger can get very crowded. Guided game drives and walking safaris are offered at the camps at a nominal fee.

3-star luxury lodges are positioned within private reserves of the Kruger, offering a more exclusive safari experience because there are fewer crowds and vehicles about. The rates at these lodges include your accommodation in well-appointed rooms, three meals daily, and two guided safari activities per day. Some lodges may even include local beverages in their nightly rate. Game drives are led by highly skilled guides in open 4×4 safari vehicles at both dawn and dusk. Optional bush walks are generally offered after breakfast and are a great way to get up-close with the flora and smaller wondrous creatures inhabiting the Kruger. Most of these lodges can accommodate families with a maximum of two young children sharing a room with their parents but it is important to note that children under 6 years are not permitted on the scheduled game drives and no children under the age of 16 years are permitted on guided bush walks.
