If being still in nature and relaxation are important to you – then you will want to visit Bakubung Bush Lodge in the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve.
About a 3 hour drive from Johannesburg and located really close to Sun City, Bakubung is popular as a family vacation spot and it’s no surprise why.
This a Malaria free area – and is also perfect for families, as there are loads of activities for the kiddies – from volleyball, to tennis courts, to a family pool, private spa, kiddies play area and conference centre – this is literally a paradise for discerning local and international travellers.
The property is sprawling and boasts a number of bars, quiet nooks and a bustling restaurant. Rooms are really spacious and views are unparalleled – upon checking in we sat on the balcony and watched zebra and buck grazing just outside our room.
Wifi is extensive and covers the entire property – great for those of us who tend to always be on our phones! The spa is stunning and the therapists are knowledgeable and cover a wide range of treatments from Mani’s to Pedi’s to massages, scrubs, facials and loads more.
We lazed on the loungers, took several dips in the pool, and even ordered drinks and lunch which were sent up from the restaurant for us, while we relaxed and enjoyed our pamper treatments.
Dinners are delicious and comprise of a vast buffet stocked with fresh salads, soups and home made rolls, veg and a carvery with several delicious meats and accompaniments which was delicious, or you can also enjoy a Bush Braai on Saturday nights too, which are hosted in the bush itself and requires one to be shuttled across on the game vehicles.
Upon disembarking from the vehicle you are greeted with great big fires, the amazing aromas of food and the sounds of drums and singing, the true feeling of Africa. The boma can seat roughly about 600 people and has two serving stations.
Once you have placed your drinks order you join the queue and get all your fave local foods – or if you are an international visitor, then you get to taste some of our amazing local meat dishes, pap and sauce and loads more, as well as local desserts too – I am always a sucker for a delicious malva and custard.
Local entertainment included singing and dancing, as well as drumming, and guests were invited to get up and join in the fun. We were so tired from all the fresh air and outdoors that we were ready to head back to bed soon after dinner, and had an early evening. Breakfasts are also buffet style and offer a huge variety of choice to suit all palettes.
Game drives depart morning and evening, and this has to be one of the best big game spotting drives we have ever been on, expect to see elephants, lions, leopard and variety of buck, bush pigs and giraffes. They do also have buffalo – but we did not get a chance to see any unfortunately!
We had a wonderful stay, and look forward to returning really soon. Find out more about Bakubung and their offerings here…
