UJ accounting grad to rise up the ranks of comedy

MELVILLE – Being the class clown is starting to pay off.

Following his performance at Poppy’s Monday Night Comedy show, Linde Sibanda shared how he got into comedy.

Sibanda (24) is one of the aspiring comedians starting to make a name for himself in the business.

His journey started a year ago when he made the decision to get on stage and prove to himself that he has a knack for making people laugh.

“I always had thoughts of doing comedy since my days as the class-clown in primary and high school, and I was ready to give it a shot.”

The University of Johannesburg accounting graduate expressed that he always knew he would either be a soccer player or comedian and, by the look of things, he is on the right track with the latter.

Midrand resident, Sibanda has already performed on some impressive stages suck as Parkers Comedy Club, Sandton Comedy Club, Kitcheners and most recently, Poppy’s Monday Night Comedy show.

He expressed the joy he had when he performed in The Box Comedy show, hosted by the Goliath brothers. This show was held at the University of Johannesburg in May, and had a warm reception from the crowd.

He explained how delighted he was to be performing at the same place he used to spend days and nights studying.

Sibanda also admitted how fortunate he has been to be coached and perform alongside a few remarkable comedians.

So far he has shared the stage with the Daily Show’s African correspondence Loyiso Madinga and host of South Africa’s Got Talent’s Tats Nkonzo.

Apart from working with these comedians, he gave special mention to the role established comedians in the industry.

He said, “There’s a lot of doubt before you go on stage and a lot of disappointment when no one laughs at your jokes but these guys come to you and talk to you. They share advice and remind me that I have massive potential.

“It goes a long way in giving me the confidence to get back on that stage. The key is to believe in yourself and they help you do that,” he explained.

Sibanda hopes to continue his rise as a comedian and plans to release a comedy series.

The series will explore his journey through high school at Christ Church College in Midrand.

In addition to this, he plans on increasing his bookings at more events.
