UJ to host a weekend of jazz in celebration of Africa Month

AUCKLAND PARK – Not your ordinary jazz show.

Langa Mavuso, Zoe Modiga and Steve Dyer Quartet and many others will be serving a buffet of music at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

UJ Arts and Culture will host a Weekend of Jazz festival from 25 to 27 May where music lovers will be able to ‘taste’ a new style of jazz called urban jazz.

Urban jazz has been described as ‘an emerging sub-genre, born of combining traditional elements of the form with other genres of music, in search of the grey areas of new and accessible forms’.

Two of the crowd pleasers will be Mavuso who recently performed at the Red Bull Music Festival and the We Are One Music Festival.

Modigo has been nominated for two 2018 South African Music Awards for her album Yellow: The Novel.

The weekend will be concluded on 27 May with an electric and unique performance titled Jazz Jam Picnic with Steve Dyer Quartet.

The festival will also be graced with performances from Mandla Mlangeni, Jazz Cats, Sun Xa Experiment, Bombshelter Beast and a remarkable hand-picked student jazz band.

The festival will also be part of Africa Month celebrations hosted by the university.

Tickets for the show will cost between R100 – R400 and can purchased on the following link, https://arts.uj.ac.za/show/WEEKENDJAZZ/
