Township jazz in the most unexpected places

SOPHIATOWN – Eclectic jazz musician, Raph Clarkson will be kicking off the Sophiatown Jazz Encounters for this year.

United Kingdom trombonist, Ralph Clarkson, who is influenced by South African township jazz, will kick off the Sophiatown Jazz Encounters for 2018 with his show, Equal Spirits.

Clarkson will be performing at the Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre on 16 February, two days after Valentine’s Day.

The young musician is a not only a trombonist but a composer and passionate music teacher.

Although Clarkson is a jazz musician, his musical portfolio is far more eclectic than other jazz artists. His music ranges from traditional jazz to improvisational music all the way through to ska and reggae.

His latest album launched in May last year, Soldiering On, explores his interest regarding the intersection between the trombone and the voice.

He explores this intersection with his new ensemble, The Dissolute Society, and Soldiering On is the ensemble’s debut album and features pianist, Huw Warren.

For Clarkson’s February performance in Sophiatown, he aims to show how South African township-style jazz is preserved in contemporary settings.

His visit to Sophiatown is not all about playing music but also about teaching it. He will host a two-day music workshop on 17 and 18 February for the community’s child musicians.

Sophiatown the Mix will provide supervised parking, glasses and ice. They encourage those attending to bring their own drinks and snacks.
