Who knew a film bigshot like Bennie Fourie lives in our very own Linden?

Fourie, who has lived in the area for over two years and who frequents The Whippet to make ‘the writing process less lonely’, is starring in the latest Afrikaans dark comedy, Vuil Wasgoed.

Fourie is from an improvisational comedy background and has starred in other comedies such as Straight Outta Benoni and Footskating 101. This time around he wrote, stars in, co-produced and did some of the Vuil Wasgoed directing.

The film’s script is Fourie’s first full feature, however, he is also the co-writer of the KykNET series, Hotel, which he also directs.

When asked if South Africa will see his name more often in the credits as a writer, he said he hopes to write more feature films, “It’s my main passion,” he said.

“[S]ometimes I will write and act and sometimes I will write and direct. In our industry it also helps not to be too dependent on whether you land each casting, you have to create your own opportunities,” Fourie said regarding the reasons he takes on so many roles at once.

The film all-rounder who has said he sees himself as a storyteller and as one, he loves being part of the entire thing and not just one aspect of storytelling. While he is the co-producer of Vuil Wasgoed and likes to be part of all aspects of his craft, he said in future he’ll leave production to the professionals.

“Being a producer is tough. I think it’s great to know and learn what the constraints and possibilities are but it’s not what I am good at so I’ll leave that to the pros in the future and focus on my strengths.”

He co-produced and co-stars in Vuil Wasgoed with well-known and outspoken Christian musician, Bouwer Bosch. Fourie and Bosch met during their undergraduate studies at the North-West University. They did improvisation comedy together and later became friends after starring in Mooirivier.

“It was on the set of this film [Mooirivier] that we got the idea for Vuil Wasgoed.”

The movie thought up on the Mooirivier set will officially come to theatres on 8 December and will likely tickle the fancy of Afrikaans speakers with a taste for dark comedy.
