Northcliff actress stars in Rock of Ages production

NORTHCLIFF – Local actress stars in the musical Rock of Ages onstage at Gold Reef City's Lyric Theatre.

Claire Taylor was always staging her own performances for her friends and neighbours.

Fast forward to today and her star keeps rising.

The talented actress is part of the multi-Tony Award-nominated Rock of Ages musical production.

Taylor, who lives in Northcliff, said her love for acting has always been innate and she has always been involved in school plays. It was not until high school that she started to take acting more seriously.

“I had a phenomenal drama teacher who inspired a love of the arts in all her students,” said Taylor.

“She suggested I consider studying musical theatre after school and I subsequently went on to study musical theatre at the Tshwane University of Technology. Next year will mark my 10th year in the professional theatre industry and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

She has been fortunate enough to work with an array of international and local producers, directors and creative teams on several productions. Her most recent theatre production was I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, produced by Jaco van Rensburg of VR Theatrical.

This production was staged in Joburg and Cape Town last year.

“My other highlights include The Fugard Theatre’s West Side Story, the international tour of The Sound of Music, Sunset Boulevard, the international tour of Dirty Dancing – The Musical and Janice Honeyman’s panto, Cinderella.
“Another career highlight was playing the leading role of Sally Bowles in The Fugard Theatre’s production of Cabaret, for which I received a Fleur Du Cap nomination for best actress in a musical.”

She also spent the latter part of last year and the first half of this year performing on a luxury cruise ship travelling the world.

Rock of Ages is a sing-along, dancing-in-the-aisle party show with tons of humour, all supporting a charming love story.

The South African premiere of the Broadway musical will be live at Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre until 10 December.
