Win tickets to see Boesman and Lena

AUCKLAND PARK – The Con Cowan Theatre is set to host an Athol Fugard play.

UJ Arts & Culture (FADA) presents Boesman and Lena as the final installment of the LIBERAT!ON MMXVI drama trilogy running at the Con Cowan Theatre from 17 May.

Inspired by an incident in 1965 when Fugard was driving down a rural South African road, the play is set in the mudflats of Port Elizabeth and tells the story of a coloured couple battered by society.

“The work places particular emphasis on societal issues and inequalities inherent in apartheid South Africa, and the effects of these inequalities,” said producer Grace Meadows. Directed by Phala Ookeditse Phala and designed by Alby Michaels, the cast features Lebohang Motaung, Lalu Mokuku and Lebogang Inno.

Ookeditse said since the play is so well known and has been performed so many times he knew that he needed to find an angle that reflected the current South African context. “In 2016, we need to understand how the classic texts, such as Athol Fugard’s, speak to us. Apartheid was a form of racism that was a form of othering.”

To stand a chance of winning one of two double tickets to watch the play at 7.30pm on any of the days between 19 and 24 May, and between 26 and 28 May, just answer this simple question:

Who is the playwright of Boesman and Lena?
