Irish melodies stir the heart

NORTHCLIFF – The residents of Elm Park teleport to Ireland through music.

Elm Park Village, part of the Flower Foundation retirement homes, celebrated St Patrick’s Day, 17 March, with Irish music from their well-rehearsed choir and other musically talented residents.

The choir, led by choir mistress Val Thornton, was supported by Yvonne Ross-Munro on the piano and Michael Glencross on the trumpet. The song If you’re Irish opened the evening with a strong sense of Irish charisma and promised an enjoyable evening ahead. Together, the trio and the choir was able to transport Elm Park residents to the green countryside, shamrocks and shillelaghs of Ireland through sound.

All choir members are either residents, staff or friends of Elm Park. Quite a few residents of Elm Park, some of whom are in the choir, originally came from Ireland. The choir entertains the residents on a number of occasions throughout the year and the well-known Irish songs make St Patrick’s Day a popular celebration. After the songs, the evening closes with snacks and drinks.

“The evening was a great hit, supported enthusiastically by residents, their friends and families,” said Elm Park resident, Judith van Diggelen.
