Excel at work with high energy snacks

JOBURG – Feeling lethargic? Read how to maintain your energy levels at work.

Energy and concentration are key elements to achieve maximum productivity during the day. A nutritionist based in Robindale, Dr Olga Rossouw, recommends some healthy snacks to keep your energy levels high throughout the day. Dr Rossouw specialises in insulin resistance and its secondary health problems, and gastroenterology.

Dr Rossouw advises to have protein snacks in your diet. High-energy protein snacks include biltong and nuts. Other snacks include fruit or dried fruit, however, only eat one fruit in a sitting as too much sugar, even if it is natural, can cause a spike in your blood sugar. If you drink fruit juice, it should be diluted. Low GI bread with peanut butter is a great alternative if you want something more substantial. Food items that have high soluble fibre are also suitable.

However, Dr Rossouw explains, “If you eat properly throughout the day and have balanced meals at the right time, you will have a constant flow of energy. If you miss a meal and try to compensate with something sugary, it will only act as a short relief and cause a spike in your blood sugar.”

An increase in blood sugar kick starts the panceras to produce insulin which prompts the body’s cells to absorb sugar. Too much or too little insulin can result in diseases such as type one and type two diabetes.
