Masters of the dice wage battle

MELVILLE – Control your favourite hero or villain in a mastermind power struggle with Dice Masters.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to control superheroes or witness the battle between DC and Marvel heroes? Molemen Dice Masters do just that every Thursday at Mega Food Court or Outer Limits in Melville.

The Molemen play Dice Masters, a two player cards and dice-based game designed by WizKids, where the players are essentially masterminds that direct the actions of a team of superheroes and villains. Each character is represented by dice and a character card. Each turn, a player will roll their dice to ‘buy’ their heroes and then attack their opponent. The opponent is defeated by reducing their 20 life points to zero.

Molemen Dice Master organiser, Gerhard ‘Carrot’ Pretorius, and Dice Masters enthusiast, Yeshin Hariparsad, explained their Thursday meetings. “We play casually every Thursday but at least once a month we have an organised play session. The organised play session follows the story line of comic books. During these sessions you are able to get cards you wouldn’t normally be able to buy,” Hariparsad said. The current story line the Molemen are playing is Avengers versus X-men.

“There is a first, second and fellowship prize. The prizes are the same for all three. The fellowship prize is given to the player who was the most fun to play against,” Pretorius explained.

Another Dice Masters enthusiast, Carla Harris, added, “You may not think it matters what place you get because you get the same prize but your place adds to your final score at the end of the story line which determines who wins the ultimate prize, plus you get the bragging rights.” At the end of any story line there is an ultimate prize that includes a card and its corresponding dice. The ultimate prize for this story line is Phoenix Force.

After an evening of organised play on 11 February, which saw epic dice rolling and three rounds of 30 minute games, player Monique Liebenberg was the obvious winner. Her boyfriend, Matthew Felix, placed second and the fellowship prize went to Carla Harris. They all walked away with a Spider-Man, the amazing. All other players received a basic action card for their participation.
