Happy in their 90s

LINDEN – Members of the Good Companions Club celebrate another birthday.

The Good Companions Club celebrated two of their members’ birthday parties on 10 February at the Linden Presbyterian Church. Helen Paton turned 95 and Hope McCall celebrated her 90th birthday.

Paton, who still drives, said she is fortunate to be happy and healthy throughout all her years. She has two daughters, five grandchildren and seven

great-grandchildren. Her main passion is making embroidery.

“I have been part of the Witswatersrand Embroidery Guild for 35 years. I really enjoy the company I have when I’m creating embroidery. My embroidery is also exhibited at the Roosevelt Recreation Centre,” she smiled.

The birthdays were celebrated with cake. Chairperson of the Good Companions Club Chris Levings said that members meet every Wednesday morning and are treated to refreshments and entertainment.

“Everyone is welcome to join our club where we also organise lifts to fetch our members from their homes. During every meeting we have different types of entertainment for our members such as singing, dancing and people giving talks,” said Levings.

McCall, who has two children and grandchildren, said this birthday was no different to previous years. “I’ve been a member of the Good Companions Club for many years. I used to love knitting when I still could but now I enjoy listening to the pianist Tony Bentel when he plays at our meetings,” said McCall.
