Gareth takes his dreams to the city that never sleeps
FAIRLAND – Gareth Meijsen sets his sights on making his dreams come true: first stop, New York City.
Gareth Meijsen (19) is a young actor on a mission to fulfil the dreams he has envisaged for himself. He plans to take over the screens with his charisma and passion.
The talented young thespian was one of five lucky and deserving teens who managed to score themselves an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City. The trip will grant him the opportunity to showcase his talent to a panel of international model agencies that could sign him. Meijsen won the trip on 6 February when Figures SA hosted their nationwide talent search, and he participated for Figures Models Randburg.
Meijsen said that he first wanted to act when he was six years old, after seeing The Grinch. “I saw Jim Carrey in The Grinch and from that day on I knew that I just wanted to be on TV,” said Meijsen.
For the Figures SA search he decided to do a monologue where he played the role of ‘My Grandfather’. When asked why he decided to portray this role, Meijsen said that he wanted to do something that he would be remembered for and would also make people laugh.
“I just honestly love making people laugh and adding something different to their lives,” said Meijsen.
The Fairland resident said that the support he receives from his mother is second to none. He said his mother motivates him to do everything to the best of his abilities. “No matter how stupid, no matter how outrageous, she is there to support me all the way,” said Meijsen.
After his trip to New York, he hopes to come home with what he calls ‘the ultimate prize’. He recalled how in primary school he was bullied by his peers and not understood by his teachers because of his attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD). Now with this opportunity, he hopes to show all those who never quite believed in him that he was meant for the success he always dreamed of.
“I want kids to look at me and think they can do anything because they see it’s possible through all that I have done,” said Meijsen.
