Gig Guide: Places to tap into this week in the City of Gold

The December holidays have passed but don’t worry, we have compiled a list of events that will see you through the first weeks of January.

Swan Lake on Ice at Montecasino

If you have not yet seen this spectacular performance of ballet on ice, make sure you do not let this last chance pass you by on 7 to 10 January at the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino, The Imperial Ice Stars in their Russian composed production of Swan Lake have received many standing ovations from audiences across 15 countries around the world. The show has also received the Best Special Entertainment Award at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards with their adrenaline-infused performance which boasts exhilarating new choreography, opulent costumes, breath-taking triple flips, death spirals and double axles. Show times are on Thursday and Friday at 7.30pm, Saturday at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and Sunday at 5.30pm. The cost is a R100 to R400 per person.

Royal Doulton Exhibition at the Roodepoort Museum

From 8 January until 31 March, as part of the worldwide celebration of the 200th anniversary of Royal Doulton Potteries, Roodepoort Museum in Florida Park is showcasing its collection of Lambeth Stoneware, Slaters Patent ware and the famous figurines and whimsical character jugs produced by the Royal Doulton Company over the past 200 years. Examples of the top quality workmanship of Doulton designers such as J Hughes, Florrie Jones, Mary Butterton, Ethal Beard and Hannah Barlow will be on display. The exhibition can be viewed from 10am until 3pm at a cost of R20. Note that the museum will only be open by appointment.

Singin’ in the Rain at the Pieter Toerien Theatre

Making a splash from the moment this critically acclaimed award-winning production premiered in the UK, this superb production will be available to see at the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino from 8 January until 13 March. Direct from London’s West End, the show has had a lot of praise from critics, four Olivier Award nominations, and a major UK tour has promised to leave audiences in awe. Set in 1927, Singin’ in the Rain tells the story, made famous by Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds in the iconic 1952 MGM movie, the first Hollywood musical, when the silver screen found its voice and left the silent movies behind. The show is packed with comedy, charm, romance and tinsel.The rain scene ‘rains’ and recycles over 12 000 litres of water per performance. This famous part of the show is one of its big highlights, leaving audiences in the front rows a little wetter than when they first arrived. Show times are from Tuesday to Friday at 8pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm and on Sundays at 1.30pm and 6.30pm. The cost of the show is R150 to R500 per person.

Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein

If you’re feeling like some good food and home crafted beer do not miss the Neighbourgoods Market that will take place on 9 January over two floors of 73 Juta Street in Braamfontein. The market is hosted in one of Jozi’s landmark buildings featuring a large-scale concrete face designed by Edoardo Villa. The second floor of the building features an extensive roof-top area with views over Braamfontein and the heart of the inner city. Marketgoers can expect high standards of quality and experience. Traders who will participate are: Origin Artisan Roasters, Nigiro Teas, Fine and Raw Chocolates, Cheese Gourmet, The Charcuterie and Richard Bosman Quality Cured Meats, Petit Cochon, Buffalo Ridge Mozzarella, Union Breweries, and Lazanou Organic Vineyards. The market will run every Saturday form 9am to 3pm and entrance is free of charge.

Viva Las Vegas at Cresta Barnyard theatre

Want to party like a rock star and experience some fun, glitz, glamour and awesome music? If so, make sure you do not miss the tribute to musical legends that has rocked Las Vegas over the past 60 years from 14 January to 6 March at the Cresta Barnyard Theatre. The tribute is to stars who have performed some of the greatest live shows in the history of music. Featuring a 10-piece cast of singers, dancers and musicians, Viva Las Vegas is a dazzling rock extravaganza paying tribute to the greatest music icons of our time. The show features divas, including Celine Dion, Cher, Britney Spears, Diana Ross, Jennifer Lopez, Shania Twain, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Santana, Elvis Presley, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Michael Bublé and Lady Gaga. Prices range from R95 to R180 per person and shows start at different times according to date.
