VIDEO: Saxophonist plans to expand his horizon

WESTDENE – Musician releases single to inspire his fans and to encourage appreciation of the gift of life.

Denzil Erasmus initially had dreams of being a fireman when he was younger until he got bitten by the music bug that compelled him to pursue a career in music.

The Westdene resident started his journey of playing the saxophone in 1997.

He fell in love with the saxophone when he witnessed someone at his church play it during a service and was also inspired by famous international saxophonist Kenny G.

Erasmus, who plays different kinds of music on his saxophone such as gospel, jazz and house music, would like to open a saxophone academy. He has worked with a number of artists in the local music industry such as Idols judge Unathi Msengana, Lulu Dikana and Ernie Smith.

“I want to give back to my community by taking someone from grassroots level and nurturing their talent since there are not many musicians who play the saxophone in South Africa. Once I get sponsorship, it is one of the things I want to focus on,” Erasmus said.

He also had an eight-month gig in the stage production Forever Young at the Barnard Theatre. He recently released a single called Sunrise, featuring Gift, produced by Leaveil Eaton.

“The song is about how as a society we focus more on the material things in life rather than appreciating the small things in life. So far we have gotten good feedback from the public. I plan to travel to Cape Town at the end of January to promote my single,” said Erasmus.

He is still in the planning process of shooting his music video and hopes to release it in the near future.
