Entertain yourself, word for word

NEWTOWN – The marketing team of Newtown Junction aims to make friends of strangers

Complete strangers can now become teammates in a super-sized game of scrabble. Since 1 September a custom-made, larger in size scrabble board can be found at the Newtown Junction near the fountain.

Players attempt to build words on the giant-sized scrabble board.

Bee Legodi, marketing manager of the Newtown Junction, said that the size of the board game creates a social element as opposed to the smaller sizes. “Two people will start playing and all of a sudden there is a whole group taking part,” said Legodi. According to her, people were too shy to take part initially, but by the end of the day there was a flurry of activity around them. The scrabble game was an initiative launched by the marketing team along with the landlord as a means of creating a space that is relevant to those who live, work and travel in the city.

Machobani Nyambe and Prince Mfayela play a game of scrabble at the Newtown Junction.

A player relaxing during his lunchtime, Machobani Nyambe (33) said that it was his first time playing scrabble at the junction, but he has a regular size board at home. “I think it is a very nice idea – especially for children. While shopping, you can leave your children here to play,” said Nyambe. His opposition, Prince Mfayela, never played scrabble before. According to him, he used to just walk passed the large board. “I think it is very interesting, the board can even be bigger,” said Mfayela.
