Westdene actor offers voice in new Afrikaans animation

WESTDENE – Well-known actor André Stolz is the Head of Orphanage in the animation Sneeukoningin.

Well-known actor André Stolz (56) from Westdene will be the voice of an animated character in the new Afrikaans animation Die Sneeukoningin (The Snow Queen).

Starburst Promotions publicity and marketing manager Alishia van Deventer said the film, which will be shown at cinemas around the world from 30 October, is based on a fairy tale that was published in 1845 by Hans Christian Andersen.

Van Deventer said the story-line is about a young girl who goes on an adventure with her pet ferret and a troll to free her kidnapped brother from the evil Snow Queen.

Stolz plays the voice of the Head of the Orphanage and said he does not relate to his character as the character is nasty and rude.

Stolz completed his drama degree at the University of Pretoria and started his acting career during his final year in 1981.

“At first I wanted to be a concert pianist but my fear of playing the piano in front of an audience pushed me into drama, and I soon realised acting is so much easier than being a classical musician,” said Stolz.

He has starred in various South African and international films, mini-series, theatre productions and has been voice acting for many animation series for television over the years.

He said playing the role of an animated character is so much harder than playing a physical character.

“With the actual character you can create your own physicality but with voice you have to read the character’s bodily expressions,” said Stolz.

Stolz said the film is highly enjoyable and it has a beautiful message without being condescending.

Paw Paw vir my Darling and Vir Altyd are the two latest films Stolz stars in, and they will be on the big screens soon.

His advice to young actors is to stay humble and always be well prepared for an audition.
