Joburg Ballet represents abroad

MELVILLE – Joburg Ballet’s Dirk Badenhorst and Iain MacDonald to represent South Afircan ballet in the Far East, USA and UK.

Joburg Ballet CEO, Dirk Badenhorst and other members of Joburg Ballet are currently representing South Africa at international ballet competitions.

Badenhorst, who is also a resident of Melville, will be judging at the Beijing International Ballet and Choreography Competition in China.

Badenhorst first served on the jury at this competition in 2013, and will be joining international luminaries such as Sergei Filin, director of the Bolshoi Ballet in Russia, Hae Shik Kim from South Korea, and Julie Kent, former ballerina of the American Ballet Theatre. Badenhorst will also attend the Seoul International Dance Competition in South Korea, where he is also set to judge.

He described these trips as a privilege. “It is an honour and pleasure to serve on this esteemed panel of jurors from around the world, and some of the most amazing companies in the world,” he said.

Meanwhile, artistic director Iain MacDonald has accepted an invitation to again teach at the annual Summer School of the American Academy of Ballet in New York, where he has been on the teaching faculty for several years.

Additionally, two Joburg Ballet dancers, Jessica Overton and Randol Figueredo, will also compete in the Beijing International Ballet competition

Badenhorst pointed out that these trips afford Joburg Ballet an opportunity to network internationally. “It allows for me to connect with these amazing leaders in the world of ballet and dance,” he concluded.
